Jean Louw
Jean Louw is a Registered Educational Psychologist with extensive experience supporting children, young people and families across education and psychological practice.
He holds a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Pretoria and brings a strong understanding of both psychology and education to his work, having spent ten years as a mathematics teacher as well as holding leadership roles within schools.
Jean works with children and young people experiencing a range of learning, emotional and developmental challenges, including learning difficulties, neurodevelopmental differences, anxiety and emotional regulation difficulties. His experience spans mainstream and specialist educational settings as well as private practice, where he has provided both psychological assessment and therapeutic support.
His therapeutic approach draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, strengths-based and trauma-informed approaches. He also has a particular interest in Interpersonal Neurobiology and in understanding how relationships and developmental experiences can influence emotional wellbeing and development.
Jean takes a thoughtful, pragmatic and strengths-based approach to his work. He sees mental wellbeing as an ongoing journey and believes that understanding ourselves, our relationships and how we respond to life’s challenges can be just as important as what we achieve.
At the heart of Jean’s practice is creating a space where children and young people feel heard, respected and understood. He works collaboratively to help them better understand themselves, develop practical strategies for managing challenges and build on their existing strengths.
Jean also values working alongside parents and whānau. He believes that helping parents better understand their child’s experiences and needs can be an important part of supporting children to develop confidence, resilience and wellbeing.
