Abi Sanford
Abi is a passionate and dedicated psychologist, committed to supporting tamariki, rangatahi, and their whānau to thrive. With a strong academic background in psychology and education, she brings both theoretical knowledge and practical insight to her work.
Before beginning her career in psychology, Abi gained rich, hands-on experience as a school teacher aide, preschool relief teacher, youth mentor, and disability support worker. These roles shaped her strengths-based and ecological approach—grounded in meaningful connection, collaboration, and a deep belief in every individual’s capacity to grow and flourish.
Abi completed her internship with the Ministry of Education, where she supported school-aged children and adolescents with diverse learning, behavioural, and emotional needs. She is now a fully registered psychologist, offering therapeutic services to rangatahi and their whānau in both school and clinical settings across Tauranga and Cambridge.
Trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for children and adolescents, Abi also has experience conducting assessments in the area of intellectual disability. She has a particular interest in emotional regulation, values-based support, and delivering neuroaffirming psychoeducation. Her warm, collaborative style helps young people feel seen, heard, and empowered with tools to navigate life’s challenges.
At The Child Psychology Service, Abi provides both in-person and telehealth therapeutic support, including early screening assessments where appropriate. Telehealth enables flexible access to care, making it easier for families to receive support in ways that suit their lifestyle and needs.
